Im new to the hangouts and I'm not sure how to research previous posts for info. Whats the procedure?

Looks to me like you simply need to go to the "Search" area at the top right hand corner of the page, select the part of the site that you want to search in the drop down list (e.g Forum) and then enter the terms that you are looking for in the text box below, then click the little arrow button.
You can also use Google to search a specific a site using this kind of approach in the Google search box: "tone bar site: mandohangout.com" - which should return results about tone bars from this site.
