Maybe it's because fewer people are shopping at stores and more are ordering online, but shipping costs seem to be going through the roof. I just packed up a guitar for shipping. It ended up at 20.2 lbs, 49" x 19" x 9". FedEx wanted over $200 to send it from Northern Michigan to Tennessee. In my experience, UPS is even more than FedEx. I took it to the US Post Office and they shipped it with insurance for $85. I guess it pays to shop around.

Odd...my experience was quite the contrary. I shipped a banjo two weeks ago from Missouri to Wisconsin. UPS only wanted $62.50 for 12 lbs and 46" x 18" x 8", and that had insurance as well. In my case FedEx and USPS were more costly.

Shipped out UPS, a Mandolin from NV to CA about a week ago;
10 lbs in a whatever size a mando shipping box is.
$26.00 + $25.00 for 1K ins.
3 day arrival time.

I shipped a ukulele via USPS a couple of weeks ago to Missouri, and it was $56. I guess the big variable is that I am in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We are a long way from anywhere, and not on the way to anywhere. Plane tickets from here are really expensive because you have to fly to some major hub, then to your destination. Maybe it's the same with package shipping.
It would be interesting to get some consistent comparisons between the big 3 shippers between various destinations. Maybe the plan is for prices to be unpredictable, so you can't consistently figure out that one is cheaper than the other.
