Been listening to Butch Baldassari's rendition of "Can't Find My Way Home" and pondering an attempt at that.

Where is that recorded Patrick? I play that song on guitar but have not heard a mandolin version. I had Butch as a teacher at Augusta one year. He was great.

You studied with him? Damn, I'm envious!

He did an album called "The Vespa Love Festival Sessions" with Gene Ford. 2007 or so? That's where I found it.

I found a LOT (all?) of his music through my local library's Freegal subscription.

I quit listening to Country songs as most are about divorce, cheating on spouse, lost and jilted lovers and heartache ! :)

And ... drinkin', hometowns, women in tight jeans, dirt roads, and honky tonks. That about does it.

Butch was a great teacher. But pretty much everything he covered is still available in the various instructional material he put out.
Also, the Augusta Workshops in Elkins, WV were amazing. I went to bluegrass week 6 or 7 times. You take classes with great musicians, the teachers do concerts in the evenings, and there are jams everywhere. I slept about 4 hrs per night all week. It's like band camp for adults.

I don't think that "...divorce, cheating on spouse, lost and jilted lovers and heartache..." or "...drinkin', hometowns, women in tight jeans, dirt roads, and honky tonks..." are the special purview of country music alone.

This week's new song is Flogging Molly's "Drunken Lullabies" and I have replaced the tenor banjo with mandolin. Although Irish punk, it is replete with drinking and heartache.  wink
