So I have a 1915 Gibson K-1 mandocello, it was purchased new by my grandfather (his memoirs note the purchase) and seems to be in completely original condition. It hasn't seen much use in the last 50 years, and is in pretty good shape, although it needs a few repairs. How does one figure out where to go to value such an instrument and see if one should get it repaired? I don't know if instruments like this are like other collectible antiques, where original condition is valued more than functionality/condition (ex. never have a good original antique table or chair refinished). I am in Austin, TX, which should be a decent place to look into this, so I am going to contact some local shops, but wondered if anyone here had any advice, as I am just starting from scratch on this. I have little idea of the value of this instrument nor, as noted above, whether I should have it fixed up before selling.

Austin Vintage currently has a 1920 Gibson Mandocello for $3,995. I would start there.

If you're willing to go a bit further afield, contact Gruhn Guitars in Nashville.

Good luck!
