Johnson Resophonic Mandolin

Monday, January 7, 2013

About 10 years ago, I acquired a Johnson Resophonic Mandolin. It was one of the first made. My first bridge lasted about 6 months before it snapped. Several inquiries through the dealer to get a new biscuit bridge resulted in only new bridge saddles but not the biscuit so I cut a new biscuit and slotted for a add-in saddle. Still I have not been able to set it up properly for decent action. In the interim, I had to replace the tailpiece five times as the bend  seems to shear from the continuous loosening and tightening that has to happen from adjusting the bridge height common to resophonics. Does anyone out there have any suggestions about a new biscuit and saddle set up and approximate height starting points. One issue I've noticed with this resonator cone that I have sot seen before is that it tends to depress under pressure so that I can set a prelim height, then tighten the strings and the cone depresses and the bridge is too low.

Would love some advice. Perhaps I should either get a new cone or scrap it altogether.

I don't know how the new ones are, but this one has been a pain in the backside.
