Wood

Tuesday, July 26, 2011

There is a WORLD of difference in tone wood, species, grain individual strength  and weaknesses.

One often overlooked aspect of tone wood is how the wood is harvested and subsequently milled into a usable form.

Some producers simply cut logs any old time, quarter saw the log, kiln dry the planks, re-saw the wood and there you go.

Others carefully harvest during peak conditions,eg. the proper phase of the moon, split the logs and use the resulting cleft of grain dictate the sawing thus eliminating "run-out", carefully air dry the wood to retain some life in the finished product.

Both methods of wood production produce wood which will make a sound, but a world of difference of the sound itself.

Properly produced wood cost more money.

Mandolins made from more expensive wood cost more money.

Many think the cost well worth while.

Go out and play many mandolins, and the ones with the better wood will be very noticeable.
