I have been busy! A few months back I decided to make some new short videos. Some would be product profiles of my more recent books with sample solos that people could access from my website. Other videos would be lessons for mandolin and guitar.

In addition to shooting the videos I wanted to flex my editing muscles a bit and learn more about Premiere editing software. (Not many people know — or care! — that I studied Radio, TV, and Film in college. I graduated in 1974. Of course the technology was a bit different in those days. The video cameras we learned on were black and white, hand-cranked, and each was about the size of a Greenhouse Double-Decker Scenicruiser. But I digress.) I loved making the videos, especially the editing! I hope to make more. The recently posted videos can all be accessed through my website musixnow. (Since I’m new to posting on Mando Hangout I’m not allowed to include URLs and links for a while. Not a problem. That’s completely understandable. You can do a search for my site “musixnow” or search my name “Dix Bruce” and you should be able to find it. Once you’re there find the website’s “Blog” section and all the links will be listed in the most recent blog.)

If you’re a mandolin player you might be interested in my in-depth lesson on the Cycle of Fifths chord progression and the mandolin chords you can use to play through it. I use Sweet Georgia Brown as an example tune. Sweet Georgia Brown is a wonderful and very popular jam tune for players in all kinds of styles of music. It’s kind of a right of passage for developing musicians to learn these more advanced chords, combine them into a progression, play the melody, and eventually improvise solos. After learning the progression in Sweet Georgia Brown you'll began to recognize it in hundreds if not thousands of other songs.

I also posted a video about my new Gypsy Swing and Hot Club Rhythm Complete for mandolin and guitar. The video explains what the books are about and how you can use them to learn 29 swing and jazz standards, chords, melodies, the rhythm comp and practice solos. I included some samples from the book.

Two other mandolin centered videos are about a couple of my recent books: Early Music Gems for Mandolin and Wedding Music for Mandolin. The videos include some audio and page samples from the book.

Happy Spring,

Dix

What is Crosspicking?

Over the years I’ve received quite a few questions about crosspicking: What is it? Is it difficult? How do I get started learning to crosspick? If you haven’t heard or used the technique yourself you might have similar questions.

Crosspicking is a somewhat advanced though beautiful way to play the guitar or mandolin. I’ve published two books about it: Old-Time Gospel Crosspicking Guitar Solos and Christmas Crosspicking Solos for Guitar.

To answer questions like those above and to hopefully encourage people to explore crosspicking I recorded a short video discussing and demonstrating how it’s done. The video is called What is Crosspicking?
