Small hands and fingers - exercise suggestions?

From OregonGal on 2/22/2013 10:43:32 AM

So far I am doing okay on the mandolin in first position, but I can see a problem with my reach. I have small hands and fingers and the two G strings can be difficult to hold down. Three fingered chords are also difficult.  Anyone know any specific exercises that would help? Thanks.

You can play G, A, B, chop chords with two fingers by placing your middle finger on the D string 5th fret, and ring finger on the G string 7th fret - which are the two lower strings of the G chop chord. Don't play the A and E strings. For A, just move this up two frets for the low end of the A chop chord. John Reischman showed me this. The bass strings make a stronger sound that resonates when in a jam or band situation, than the treble strings. Hope this helps. - E.K.

ps. The strings get closer together when you go up the neck, and thus, it becomes easier to reach the notes on a chord, esp. a chop chord.

Thanks - it works well.
