Since composing music and lyric creation and wildly different skills and it seems that so many musicians struggle to an extent with lyrics, why don't we all put together our collective knowledge on the subject and hopefully we'll all be the better for it

	dayzee7444 says: 1/15/2013 11:28:44 AM I"m by no means even a mediocre lyricist but one piece of advice that I read that seems to make a lot of sense is to really simplify what you want to say, sometimes to the point of ambiguity. Obviously a technique like that is a preference thing and of course there are exceptions like Dylan and Paul Simon, but the aim in obscuring your message is to take out all the details so that only the emotion you want to convey comes through. This allows your audience to grasp the feeling but take away their own interpretation. conversely if you sing about a specific event that much of the audience is not likely to have experience it may loose their interest. I'm sure this style isn't for everyone and obviously certain genres like bluegrass wouldn't take to it too well. But for those of you more interested in more contemporary stuff I think I can be pretty compelling. For me personally, I really dig music that's almost on the verge of being nonsensical - it sorta allows you to construct the content of the song on your own. ...I should add that I guess I understand this concept pretty well but when it comes to practice, I'm kinda hopeless on all fronts of writing lol
