I have never played any instrument before and was getting ready for a 6 month long deployment so I decided to learn to play an instrument. I wanted something small I could pack around easily. I did not like the sound of the Uke or a half size guitar. So I decided on the mandolin. So 2 years ago I started playing the Mandolin and being self taught throughout the time frame my abilities are coming along nicely. I started out with a Fender FM-100 mandolin pack and after 1 year discovered that the neck was just to narrow for my big fingers to play cleanly. I picked up a Loar LM-520 in Feb of 2011 and have really been able to move along learning songs, strumming and just all around getting better.
